Jan Pietras - myotwin

What is your personal story of how you ended up in the life sciences?

My journey into the life sciences wasn’t solely marked by a single event in my life or an inspirational person. Rather, I’ve always had an intrinsic urge to build something impactful that would generate a greater benefit. It just felt natural.

When I reflect on my upbringing, I recognize my mother’s subtle influence. Her career in the pharmaceutical industry bore similarities to my eventual path in the life sciences. Rather than delving deep into academia and becoming an expert in one specific research area, I instead chose to broaden my education to be able to pursue my inclination toward entrepreneurship.

With a background in mechanical engineering, I transitioned to industrial engineering to learn more about the business side. My career trajectory led me to explore diverse fields like a short episode in 3D printing of medical implants. Most recently, I worked in myocardial tissue engineering at the University Medical Center in Göttingen, Germany.

Each career step was motivated by a desire to tackle complex problems from an engineering perspective. Eventually, my Ph.D. thesis led me to study tissue engineering and bioprocess technology with a focus on myocardial tissue engineering. That is essentially what we do now at myotwin.
