Mark Carney is an economist and global public leader whose career spans top roles in central banking, sustainable finance, and government. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, he spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs before moving into public service at the Bank of Canada and Canada’s Department of Finance. As Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008–2013) and later the first non‑British Governor of the Bank of England (2013–2020), he helped navigate the global financial crisis and its aftermath, shaping international regulatory standards and macro‑prudential policy.
Following his central banking career, Carney became the UN Secretary‑General’s Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance, co‑leading initiatives such as the Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets and the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero to align private capital with net‑zero objectives. He also led transition investing at Brookfield Asset Management and served on the boards of organizations including Bloomberg L.P. and the World Economic Forum, helping mainstream climate risk, ESG and sustainability in global finance. In March 2025 he became leader of the Liberal Party and was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister, bringing this experience to national policy on competitiveness, sustainability and long‑term value creation.
